The Open House That Ended With a Fire, and a Lesson We’ll Never Forget

The Open House That Ended With a Fire, and a Lesson We’ll Never Forget

There are certain moments in real estate that you’ll remember for the rest of your career, this was one of them. We had the pleasure of meeting Rod a retired CAF member and his partner Kim.
We had spent weeks preparing our clients’ home for the market. The photos were done, the marketing was live, and our team member, Rachel, was hosting a great open house.
As the afternoon came to a close, she was doing what every REALTOR® does before leaving; walking through the home, turning off lights, locking doors, and making sure everything was secure.
Then she noticed something no one ever expects to see, a lightbulb in one of the bedrooms had caught fire.
Thinking quickly, Rachel grabbed the fixture when it fell to the floor on the carpet and threw it into the bathtub in the nearby bathroom to contain it. Unfortunately, the burning fixture ignited the shower curtain.
Within moments, the fire department was on site. Thankfully, Rachel got out safely, and the fire was contained before it became even more devastating.

The Phone Call

As you can imagine, making the call to our clients was one of the hardest conversations we’ve ever had. How do you tell someone that their house caught fire… during an open house?
We explained what had happened. There was a pause, then our client asked one question.
“Is Rachel okay?”
We told him she was and his response is something I’ll never forget.
“It’s okay. It’s just a house.”
I was more panicked than he was!

What Happened Next

The home needed to be professionally restored. Naturally, the sale was put on hold while repairs were completed over the upcoming months.
It would have been easy to become discouraged (many people probably would have). Instead, our clients stayed remarkably positive throughout the entire process.
When the restoration was complete, we brought the home back to market and it less than two weeks it sold. Soon after, they moved into the home they had been dreaming about all along.
They ended up buying an amazing home in Almonte and are very happy there.

Why This Story Matters

People often think real estate is about pricing, marketing, negotiations, and contracts.
Those things are important.
But sometimes this job has nothing to do with houses.
Sometimes it’s about helping people through situations nobody could ever plan for, sometimes it’s about supporting clients through uncertainty, and sometimes it’s simply about being reminded that kindness and perspective matter far more than any transaction ever will.

A Lesson We’ll Always Carry

In twenty years of selling homes, we’ve experienced plenty of unexpected situations.
But I’ve never forgotten that phone call.
The house was repaired, the sale was completed. Our clients moved on to the next chapter of their lives.
But what I’ll remember most isn’t the fire, it’s the character our clients showed in one of the most stressful moments imaginable.

Rod and Kim, thank you for reminding our entire team what really matters.
